Warren shuts down auto salvage, towing company for zoning violation

Sep 01, 2023Sep 01, 2023

The City of Warren closed down Neuner's Automotive Recyclers, LLC on Mound Road earlier this week after an April inspection by the city's building department revealed several violations.

The business, which is located on Mound Road between 12 Mile Road and I-696, also houses Neuner's Automotive and Truck Sales, LLC and Neuner's towing operations.

Owner Glenn Neuner said he was unable to comment on the shutdown.

City Clerk Sonja Buffa confirmed Neuner's licenses for operating a junkyard, a second hand goods dealership, and secondhand vehicle dealership have been suspended as well as their city towing contract that was approved by the city council earlier this year.

Documents obtained from Warren's building and legal departments state that Neuner's, which is currently zoned M-2, needs to be rezoned as M-4 in order to continue to operate its auto salvage and sales businesses. An inspection report from Warren Building Department Director James Cummins also cites 11 violations including improper storage of vehicles, lack of a required dumpster enclosure, and outdoor storage of vehicles on a surface not properly paved and drained with oil separators.

Cummins also states in his inspection report that a fire safety inspection and completion of a 2020 site plan including the addition of a berm must be executed and that outdoor auto storage and sales must be discontinued.

According to tax records, Neuner's has operated a business at the Mound Road location since 2011.

A letter from Warren assistant city attorney Cecil St. Pierre to owner Glenn Neuner dated May 25 states "until a satisfactory inspection by Mr. Cummins, in writing, and a fire safety inspection is conducted and presented to our office, no work shall transpire on the property at 27365 Mound Road in Warren until future notice."
